Today's Question: Are you there God?

It seems that 'Bruce Almighty' has caused quite a stir for people all over the country in more ways than one. By now I'm sure you've heard of the phone number ordeal from the film. In case you haven't, here is the scoop. In the movie Morgan Freeman (who is a character named god [little 'g' on purpose]) keeps trying to get a hold of Jim Carey (who has god like powers, at least in the producers opinion) by paging him with a phone number. The phone number is displayed repeatedly throughout the movie and is an actual phone number. (776-2323)

I read this today in the Star Tribune:

Jenny Becvar of St. Paul is 28 and single and has a steady job. And she is being bombarded with calls from guys -- looking for God."I thought it was really odd," she remembers thinking when the calls started rolling in over the weekend, she said.

Then Wednesday, while listening to a radio station at work, she found out that she wasn't the only one.

Since the movie "Bruce Almighty" hit the theaters nationwide Friday, Becvar and a number of other people across the country have been getting a lot of calls , because they have the same seven-digit number that God has in the movie.

The number is repeatedly displayed on a pager whenever God (Morgan Freeman) wants to talk to Jim Carrey, who plays a TV newsman.

"I had no idea what was happening," Becvar said. Now she sees it as a "great opportunity to talk about God."

She has even changed her voice message, turning it into a mini-sermon.

Callers to the number in the east metro's 651 area code will hear Becvar preach: "Looking for God? Well, I'm not him, but I do know him. And knowing him has changed my life. You can know him, too. In fact, it's a local call.

"To get to God, call on Jesus. Jesus said that he is the way, the truth and the life. No one can come to God the Father except through him.

"So, if you want a reconciled relationship with God, your sins forgiven, hope in this world, and eternal life when you die, call upon Jesus Christ and you'll have a direct connection to God. You won't regret it."

There are others who are getting these calls and are irate, which is understandable. Getting back to today's question though; "Are you there God?". This movie, while being a disgrace to whom God truly is, is being used to reach people. Did you read that? People are seeking Him, wanting to know him.

There are plenty of people who are hurting, lost, unsure of their place in this world. Whom better to lead them to than Jesus? Am I saying use this movie as an evangelism tool? No. I'm saying that at your workplace, school or wherever you may be and this movie is being talked about, an opportunity has presented. What are you going to do with that opportunity? Some people constantly look for "witnessing" opportunities, or "wait on God". Am I saying run around like a lunatic and scream in the town square about Jesus and His love? No. What I am saying however is that when I read the Bible, Jesus doesn't wait on Himself to give Himself the 'okay' to start talking about Himself. He assesses the situation and speaks to it. That's what we are to do. Walk in His spirit, let the Spirit assess the situation and speak.

Let me know if I'm off base here. Keep the comments coming!

"If anyone wishes to do God's work, he must take time for fellowship with Him, to receive His wisdom and power. The dependence and helplessness, of which this is an evidence, open the way and give God the opportunity of revealing His power."

Andrew Murray

In light of what I wrote the other day, this is a perfect quote. Any thoughts?
